
Bloomington, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team travelled to Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, January 28, to take part in the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. One of the highlights for SXU at the meet was sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) finishing fourth overall in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.11. The duo of senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and freshman Kyle Counter (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) in the 3000-meter run was also impressive. Rychel finished in second place overall at 8:57 and Counter claimed fifth place in 9:07. The 1600-meter relay team consisting of Kenney, junior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Eisenhower), freshman Matt Krakowski (Alsip, Ill./Marist) and senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) finished sixth in 3:37.40.


Joliet, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team braved 35-degree weather to compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships outdoor track meet this weekend at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill. Highlights for the Cougars include a conference winning shot-put throw of 45'2" by junior Michael Johnson (Harvey, Ill./Thornton). Freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) took second overall in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds, while the 4x800 relay team of juniors Rich Eber (Oak Lawn, Ill./Illinois State/Brother Rice), Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) as well as sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice) also took second place.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's outdoor track team competed at the Chicagoland Championships on Saturday, April 9, on the campus of University of Chicago. Highlights of this meet included: junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) turning in a fine time of 1:59.88 in the 800-meter run, junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) running a season-best time of 4:01.02 in the 1500-meter run, freshman Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) capping a season's best 10:17 in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 4x400 meter relay team of Rychel, junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and Hummer posting a time of 3:34.21.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team opened its 2011 outdoor season with a bit of "double duty" with meets on both Wednesday, March 30, and Saturday, April 2. Opening the season at the Troll Invitational hosted by Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., SXU's highlights included a winning shot put throw by junior Michael Johnson (Harvey, Ill./Thornton) of 48'1" as well as junior Brandon Hummer's (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) sixth-place finish in the 1500-meter run in 4:11.76 and a third-place finish of the 4x400 relay team consisting of Hummer, sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice), junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in a time of 3:36.72.

CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University men's cross country/track and field coach Ed McAllister will be officially inducted into the Mendel Catholic Prep High School Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011 on Friday, April 15, at the Lexington House in Hickory Hills, Ill. McAllister was a teacher and cross country/track coach at Mendel from 1970 until 1976. Under his tutelage, Mendel's cross country and track programs became powerhouses within the Chicago Catholic League, including a conference championship by the varsity track team in 1975 and a number of individual state qualifiers. McAllister has coached at Saint Xavier University since 2004 and continues to find success after winning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and NAIA Region VII Cross Country Coach of the Year honors following the 2005 campaign.
