[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] Saint Xavier Men's Track Finishes Fourth at CCAC Meet

Bourbonnais, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track and field team finished fourth overall at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Track and Field Championships hosted at Olivet Nazarene University this past Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars had plenty of individual highlights as the team amassed 83 points in the six-team meet. Leading the day for SXU was versatile freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), who excelled by performing and scoring in six events overall. Stancato finished third in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter run turning in outstanding times of 11.19 and 22.39, respectively. His day was just beginning though as he finished sixth overall in the pole vault topping a height of 11'6" and throwing the javelin for a sixth place finish with a toss of 40.18 meters. Scancato then anchored both the second place 4x100 and 4x400 meter runner-up relays in school record times of 43.89 and 3:25.64, respectively.

Lisle, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team was active on Saturday, April 14, running at the Eagle Invitational at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. While the meet was basically considered a means of preparing for the upcoming Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships meet on Saturday, April 21, it was not without highlights. The Cougars had freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), who lowered his season-best time in the 100-meter dash to 11.29. In addition, the 800-meter trio of sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) clocked season-best marks of 1:56.63, 1:56.94 and 1:57.00, respectively.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team headed over to University of Chicago last weekend to take part in the Chicagoland Championships held on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. The meet matched up a number of the top tier collegiate track teams from around the Chicago area. The Cougars fared well against the NCAA Division I programs in attendance, including University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), DePaul University and Chicago State University. Leading the way was freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), who finished seventh overall in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash in times of 11.47 and 22.63, respectively.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team opened up its outdoor season in Chicago over the weekend under some cold conditions (39 degrees) at the Ted Haydon Invitational hosted by University of Chicago. Overall highlights for the day included: sophomore Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) and freshman Tyler Hoeg (Channahon, Ill./Concordia University/Minooka) in the 100-meter dash with times of 11.84 and 11.95, respectively as well as freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.82 and senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) finishing sixth overall in the 800-meter run at 2:00.50. Other notable performances were freshman Kyle Counter's (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:08.50 and a third-place finish in the 400-meter relay consisting of freshman Brandon Gentry (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East), Hoeg, Stancato and Pesek at 44.88.

The Saint Xavier University men's track team ran at the Gina Relays at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., on Friday, April 29. The 4x800 meter relay team consisting of junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) set a school record by running the relay in the time of 7:50.83 seconds. The time narrowly missed the NAIA National qualifying time of 7:49.00.

Joliet, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team braved 35-degree weather to compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships outdoor track meet this weekend at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill. Highlights for the Cougars include a conference winning shot-put throw of 45'2" by junior Michael Johnson (Harvey, Ill./Thornton). Freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) took second overall in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds, while the 4x800 relay team of juniors Rich Eber (Oak Lawn, Ill./Illinois State/Brother Rice), Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) as well as sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice) also took second place.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's outdoor track team competed at the Chicagoland Championships on Saturday, April 9, on the campus of University of Chicago. Highlights of this meet included: junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) turning in a fine time of 1:59.88 in the 800-meter run, junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) running a season-best time of 4:01.02 in the 1500-meter run, freshman Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) capping a season's best 10:17 in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 4x400 meter relay team of Rychel, junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and Hummer posting a time of 3:34.21.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team opened its 2011 outdoor season with a bit of "double duty" with meets on both Wednesday, March 30, and Saturday, April 2. Opening the season at the Troll Invitational hosted by Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., SXU's highlights included a winning shot put throw by junior Michael Johnson (Harvey, Ill./Thornton) of 48'1" as well as junior Brandon Hummer's (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) sixth-place finish in the 1500-meter run in 4:11.76 and a third-place finish of the 4x400 relay team consisting of Hummer, sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice), junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in a time of 3:36.72.

[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] SXU's McAllister to be Inducted into Mendel's Hall of Fame

CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University men's cross country/track and field coach Ed McAllister will be officially inducted into the Mendel Catholic Prep High School Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011 on Friday, April 15, at the Lexington House in Hickory Hills, Ill. McAllister was a teacher and cross country/track coach at Mendel from 1970 until 1976. Under his tutelage, Mendel's cross country and track programs became powerhouses within the Chicago Catholic League, including a conference championship by the varsity track team in 1975 and a number of individual state qualifiers. McAllister has coached at Saint Xavier University since 2004 and continues to find success after winning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and NAIA Region VII Cross Country Coach of the Year honors following the 2005 campaign.

[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] SXU's Velasquez Qualifies for Nationals in the Marathon

Cincinnati, Ohio - Saint Xavier University freshman and Cincinnati native Izak Velasquez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) made the most of a trip back home by winning the prestigious Cincinnati Heart Fund Half Marathon Sunday with a time of 1:15:03 over the 13.1-mile course, which winded through parts of both Ohio and Kentucky. The time qualifies Velasquez for the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the full marathon. Freshman Chris Sarna (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) finished third overall in the half marathon in a time of 1:17:35, narrowly missing the NAIA's qualifying standard.
