[Men's Track & Field] Stancato Named World Hyundai-Saint Xavier Athlete of the Month

CHICAGO – Finishing first in three separate events at the 2013 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on April 20, sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) of the men's track and field team was selected as the World Hyundai-Saint Xavier April Athlete of the Month when the honor was announced Wednesday. Stancato, a biology (pre-medicine) major at SXU, also set a new conference record with a time of 10.99 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the conference meet in addition to winning the 200-meter dash (22.58 seconds) and anchoring the conference champion 4x400 meter relay team. He was the highest individual point scorer at the CCAC Championships accounting for 38 of SXU's points at the meet.

[Men's Track & Field] Saint Xavier Men�s Track Takes Small Group to Gina Relays

Hillsdale, Mich. – The Saint Xavier University men's track team took a small contingent of runners to the prestigious Gina Relays at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., over the weekend and the results were highly successful. The weekend started off last Thursday evening with freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) finishing fourth overall in the 10,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 32:20. On Friday, sophomore Matt Krakowski (Alsip, Ill./Marist) took seventh overall in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 50.90. Finally on Saturday, sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) capped another successful weekend by taking fourth-place overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.98 seconds and then finishing sixth in the 200-meter dash in 22.33 seconds.

Joliet, Ill. – Highlighted by a pair of first-place finishes by sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), the Saint Xavier University men's track team finished fourth overall at the third annual Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships held at Memorial Stadium this past Saturday in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars claimed the No. 4 spot in the eight-team meet with 78 points. Stancato blazed his way to the top spot in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, winning the shorter sprint in a conference record time of 10.99 seconds and coming back in the 200 with a winning time of 22.58 seconds. Amazingly, Stancato's day was far from complete. He also finished second in the javelin throw (40.71m), third overall in the pole vault (3.20m), anchored the third-place 4x100 meter relay team (44.74) and then finished the day by anchoring the conference champion 4x400 relay team (3:28.03).

Romeoville, Ill. – Braving the windy and cold conditions, the Saint Xavier University men's track team opened its 2013 outdoor season at the Chicagoland Championships hosted by Lewis University this past weekend. On Friday night, the longer distance runs and junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) started the evening with a 10^th place finish in the 5K (5000 meters) with a time of 15:20. He was followed by a Cougar trio in the 10K (10000 meters) as junior Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) took fifth overall (32:41) with junior Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) and freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) posting seventh (32:57) and eighth place finishes (32:58), respectively.

[Men's Track & Field] Saint Xavier Men�s Track Qualifies Two in Final Season Meets

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team had a busy weekend splitting the team over two meets with one group participating at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up in Allendale, Mich., last Friday and the rest of the squad heading to University of Chicago's Margaret Bradley Classic Saturday. The Cougar runners had resounding success qualifying two individual runners for the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships and achieving season-best times for three of the runners. Friday's highlights included junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) qualifying in the 800-meter run with an outstanding time 1:56.51 besting the NAIA qualifying mark of 1:56.65, while junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) added to his qualifying list by running a national qualifying time of 4:21.8 in the mile run. Sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) notched a solid 22.57 in the 200-meter dash as well.

Naperville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team ran at the Chicagoland Indoor Track Championships at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., this past weekend. The Cougars had an impressive start to the meet with the team's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) squad of freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka), sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) finishing fourth overall in a school record time of 10:19.70 and met the NAIA's "A" standard qualifying time for the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships held on Thursday, February 28, to Saturday, March 2, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. In addition, Corcoran took fifth overall in the 800-meter run with a "B" standard qualifying time of 1.58.80.

CHICAGO – With the first two meets of its indoor season in the books, the 2013 Saint Xavier University men's track team had plenty of highlights and some individual performers to keep an eye on as the season progresses. The Cougars opened their season at the Lewis Invitational on Friday, January 18, and then competed at the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., this past weekend. Although the squad has not boasted any national qualifiers to date, head coach Ed McAllister believes that there is a strong core of runners on his squad who are getting close to the qualifying marks.

CHICAGO – Over the holiday break, a pair of distance runners on the Saint Xavier University men's track team qualified for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the marathon with their times at the Fighting Bee Half Marathon in Davenport, Iowa. Junior Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) finished second overall in the race with an impressive "A" standard qualifying time of 72:16 for the 13.1-mile event, while junior Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) crossed the finish line a minute later at 73:16 to claim fourth place and a "B" standard qualifying time. The marathon at the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will take place in Marion, Ind., on Saturday, May 25, with the race kicking off at 6 a.m.

Geneva, Ohio - The Saint Xavier University men's indoor track team brought two of their finest relays to the 2012 NAIA National Championships in Geneva, Ohio, to compete over the weekend. The 4x800 meter relay team consisting of sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) and sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) finished in 15th place nationally with a school record time of 7:50.76. Doubling back in just two hours, the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team consisting of Corcoran, freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), Kenney and senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished 16th nationally in a time of 10:26.77. While both teams narrowly missed qualifying for the finals, these were "high-water" marks for the team.

CHICAGO - For the second time in as many weeks, the Saint Xavier University men's track team qualified another relay team for the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. This time, it was the 4x800 relay team consisting of sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) and sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice). The Cougars covered the 3200-meter distance in a time of 7:56.00 at the DePauw Classic in Greencastle, Ind. The time was sufficient to qualify for the "A" standard for the national meet held in Geneva, Ohio, on March 1-3.

Naperville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team achieved another milestone Saturday at the Chicagoland Indoor Track Championships hosted at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., over the weekend. The distance medley relay (DMR) team consisting of freshman Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) qualified for the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships with a time of 10:23.17. The group becomes the first SXU men's squad ever to reach the "A" standard in the event. Stancato, also highlighted the weekend finishing ninth in the 200-meter dash with a personal record time of 23.17 seconds.

Bloomington, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team travelled to Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, January 28, to take part in the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. One of the highlights for SXU at the meet was sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) finishing fourth overall in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.11. The duo of senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and freshman Kyle Counter (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) in the 3000-meter run was also impressive. Rychel finished in second place overall at 8:57 and Counter claimed fifth place in 9:07. The 1600-meter relay team consisting of Kenney, junior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Eisenhower), freshman Matt Krakowski (Alsip, Ill./Marist) and senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) finished sixth in 3:37.40.

Geneva, Ohio - Two members of the Saint Xavier University men's track team qualified for the 2011 NAIA National Indoor Track Championships held late last week and competed at the finals in Geneva, Ohio, on Friday, March 4. Junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished 17th overall in the mile run with a time of 4:23.38 and junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) finished 20th overall in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:36.21. SXU head men's track coach Ed McAllister was pleased with the pair of performances.

CHICAGO - The Margaret Bradley Invitational "Last Chance" track meet in Chicago proved to be a justified last chance for the Saint Xavier University men's indoor track team this past Saturday and the Cougars took full advantage qualifying two individuals for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Newark, Ohio, from March 3-5. Juniors Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) qualified in the indoor mile and 1000-meter runs, respectively. Hummer ran initially and produced a stellar time of 2:32.06 easily besting the 2:33.80 qualifying standard in the event. Rychel competed in the mile 90 minutes later and notched a time of 4:21.80, which easily outdistanced the qualifying standard of 4:23.20. SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister was thrilled with the performances.

Naperville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's indoor track team took part in the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill., on Saturday, February 11. Highlights for the Cougars included: freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) in the 60-meter dash in 7.26 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.90 as well as a seventh-place finish for the distance medley relay (DMR) team of junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice) and junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew).
