[Baseball] Saint Xavier�s Vachon Named to All-CCAC Baseball First Team

Joliet, Ill. – Saint Xavier University junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) earned a spot on the first team of the 2013 All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Baseball Team when the honors were announced by the conference office Monday morning. Vachon went a perfect 7-0 on the mound for the Cougars this season and turned in a career-low 3.19 earned run average (ERA) and team-leading 51 strikeouts over 62.0 innings of work. He finished the 2013 campaign tied for sixth overall in the conference in wins (7) and 10^th overall in strikeouts (51). It is the first time in his SXU career he has earned all-conference recognition.

Joliet, Ill. – Saint Xavier University junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week Tuesday when the award was released by the conference office. Vachon led the Cougars to a pair of wins last week in key conference competition against Robert Morris University (Ill.) and University of St. Francis (Ill.). With his two victories on the week, he kept his perfect win-loss record intact finishing the 2013 campaign with a 7-0 mark and a team-best earned run average (ERA) of 3.19.

Joliet, Ill. – Needing a doubleheader sweep Saturday to keep its postseason hopes alive, the Saint Xavier University baseball team did just that taking a pair from Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (23-18 overall/18-12 CCAC) got a huge pitching performance from junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) in game one en route to a 4-1 victory, his seventh of the year at 7-0, and then scored a run in the top of the ninth of game two to complete the sweep with a 6-5 win. With Olivet Nazarene's sweep of Trinity Christian College Saturday, SXU still has a chance of qualifying for the six-team CCAC Baseball Tournament next week. TCC heads to Whiting, Ind., on Monday, April 29, for a make-up game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) and needs a win to take the final playoff berth or the Cougars get in.

CHICAGO – Junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, but the Saint Xavier University baseball team were outhit 17-9 and fell by a score of 11-3 to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Friday afternoon on "Senior Day" at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (21-18 overall/16-12 CCAC) had their chances leaving 20 runners stranded on the base paths in the nine-inning affair. Senior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) suffered the loss (2-1) pitching the first 5.2 innings and allowing 13 hits, eight runs (all earned) and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. With the loss, SXU's chances of earning a postseason berth in next week's conference tournament become very slim.

CHICAGO – A two-run homer to left field by senior designated hitter Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) in the bottom of the eighth inning helped the Saint Xavier University baseball team score three late runs in the second game of a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) and capture a 8-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars dropped the first game by a score of 8-5 and desperately needed a win in the late game to keep its postseason hopes alive as one of the six teams competing for a spot in next week's CCAC Tournament. SXU also got a RBI single from sophomore third baseman Bryan Villanova (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in the seventh inning to spark the late three-run surge. With the split, Saint Xavier sits at 21-17 overall and 16-11 in conference play.

Bensenville, Ill. – Junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) improved his season record to 6-0 and struck out 11 batters in leading the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 3-2 victory in game one of a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Robert Morris University (Ill.) Monday evening at Geils Field in Bensenville, Ill. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not carry that momentum into the late game falling to the host Eagles by a score of 4-2 in the nightcap. Vachon threw all seven innings of Monday's opener and allowed just seven hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks. With the split, SXU now sits at 20-16 overall and 15-10 in the conference standings.

Crestwood, Ill. – Sophomore third baseman Bryan Villanova (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) went 3-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI in leading the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a doubleheader split with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill. The Cougars started the day with an 8-3 victory in game one, but a pair of Lakers' runs in the bottom of the eighth inning led to a 5-3 loss in the nightcap. Senior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) earned the win on the mound in Saturday's opener improving to 2-0 on the year and allowing seven hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with three strikeouts over the first 5.2 innings.

CHICAGO – Powered by a combined 22 hits on the day, including five doubles and a homer, the Saint Xavier University baseball team swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (18-14 overall/13-8 CCAC) got a huge sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Alika Andres (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kaloheo) in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the game-winning RBI in a 4-3 victory in Tuesday's opener. In the late game, SXU used six runs in the bottom of the third inning to spark a 12-2 win in seven innings.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Managing a combined 12 total hits on the day, the Saint Xavier University baseball team struggled to get into a offensive rhythm and dropped a pair of non-conference games to Davenport University (Mich.) Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars (16-14 overall) dropped the first seven-inning game by a score of 8-4 and then recorded only four hits in the second game en route to a 10-0 loss. Senior designated hitter Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North), senior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) were the only three SXU players to post multiple hits Sunday with each recording two on the day.

South Bend, Ind. – Senior lefthander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 3-0 win over Holy Cross College (Ind.) in the first game of a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Saturday at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Unfortunately, the day's second game did not go as smooth as the Cougars gave up 10 late runs to fall 13-2 in seven innings. Klett moved to 1-0 on the year with Saturday's victory, which gave SXU the edge in the three-game series after its 11-8 win on Friday. He racked up six strikeouts in the game to go along with one walk. With the split, Saint Xavier now stands at 16-12 on the year with an 11-8 mark in CCAC play.

CHICAGO – Led by three hits, including a three-run homer, by junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel), the Saint Xavier University baseball team braved the wet and cold weather conditions and were rewarded with an 11-8 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Holy Cross College (Ind.) Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The scheduled nine-inning game was called due to darkness in the bottom of the fifth, but counts as an official game since at least five innings were played. The Cougars improve to 15-11 overall with the victory and 10-7 in CCAC play, while the Saints fall to 16-22 on the year and 8-11 in the conference standings. Junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) earned the win (3-2) throwing all five frames and allowing six hits, eight runs (six earned) and four walks with a pair of strikeouts.

CHICAGO – Holding a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Saint Xavier University baseball team could not sustain it giving up seven runs over the next two frames and finally falling 11-8 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action with Judson University (Ill.) Monday night at Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill. The Cougars (14-11 overall/9-7 CCAC) got big games out of juniors Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence), who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), who finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. With the victory, Judson improves to 26-14 on the year and 11-3 in conference play.

CHICAGO – Behind a combined seven hits from junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley), the Saint Xavier University baseball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Trinity Christian College Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (14-10 overall/9-6 CCAC) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to break up an 8-8 tie and won the first game, 9-8. SXU was then on the short end of a lengthy second game (three hours, 52 minutes) that ended with TCC hanging on to get a 21-16 victory. Saint Xavier fell behind 12-1 in the first two innings of game two.

Palos Heights, Ill. – Managing just five hits on the afternoon, the Saint Xavier University baseball team fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College, 7-1, in the first of a three-game weekend series with the Trolls Friday afternoon at the TCC Baseball Field in Palos Heights, Ill. Freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) provided SXU with its lone RBI of the game on an infield groundout in the top of the fifth inning. Senior right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) suffered the loss (4-2) on the mound for the Cougars throwing the first seven innings and allowing 11 hits, seven runs (six earned) and a walk with three strikeouts. With the loss, Saint Xavier falls to 13-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play. TCC improves to 13-12 on the year and 9-4 in the CCAC.

CHICAGO – Big days at the plate by junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) helped propel the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity International University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (13-8 overall/8-4 CCAC) rallied from a early 4-0 deficit in the first game to capture a 6-4 victory and then scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the nightcap, 9-8. Klein went a combined 3-for-7 with a triple, a homer, two runs scored and four RBI; while Augle also combined for a 3-for-7 showing with a triple, three runs scored and three RBI.
