[SXU] Seven SXU Spring Athletes Named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Kansas City, Mo. – With the softball team leading the way with four representatives, Saint Xavier University Athletics had seven of its spring season student-athletes named as 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes when the NAIA national office in Kansas City, Mo., released the awards this week. The foursome from the softball team included junior Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville), senior Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), junior Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and senior Ashley Sullivan (Lemont, Ill./UW-Parkside/Lemont). In order to be nominated, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and achieved junior academic status.

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University Athletics Department held its 2013 SXU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet Wednesday evening at the Shannon Center to honor 86 student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. Student-athletes recognized have maintained at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) through December 31, 2012, and each received either a bronze, silver or gold medallion as their award based on their respective GPA. In addition, seniors Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Shane Zackery (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) were named the 2012-13 SXU Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year. Mollohan is majoring in mathematics and was a first team honoree on last season's Capital One Academic All-America College Division Softball Team as well as a Daktronics-Scholar-Athlete. Zackery is finishing up his major in business administration and helped lead the Cougars to the semifinals of the 2012 NAIA Football Championship Series. He led the team with 80 catches for 1,122 yards and 13 touchdowns as well as being named to the 2012 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Class, which made up the 15 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy that recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

CHICAGO – With both the Saint Xavier University men's and women's basketball teams set to kick off NAIA National Championship play on Wednesday, March 6, fans not able to make it down to either Point Lookout, Mo. (men's) or Sioux City, Iowa (women's) will have some online options for tracking the tournament action. The NAIA will have all tournament games video streamed online for fans interested in watching the action. [SXU] Saint Xavier Basketball Teams Awaiting Seeds From NAIA

CHICAGO – Both the Saint Xavier University men's and women's basketball teams will learn its seeds and first round opponents for the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's and Women's National Championships this evening when NAIA national office releases its pairings for the national tournaments later this evening. The NAIA plans to host a Men's and Women's Division II Basketball National Championship selection show on its website starting at 7 p.m. this evening to release the brackets for both 32-team, single-elimination tournaments. The women's bracket will be released at 7 p.m. with the men's bracket immediately following at around 7:15 p.m. The selection show will be free to view online at the NAIA's website at www.naia.org.

CHICAGO --- After 150 league games on the men's basketball side and 126 games on the women's side, only three things are certain in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference heading into the final Saturday of the regular season, Cardinal Stritch University is the No. 1 seed and Saint Xavier University is the No. 2 seed for next week's CCAC Men's Basketball Tournament and University of St. Francis is the No. 6 seed and Indiana University South Bend is the No. 7 seed for the women's league tournament. All 21 other seeding positions are still up in the air, including 11 of 12 spots on the women's side.

[SXU] 18 SXU Fall Athletes Honored by CCAC For Academic Excellence

CHICAGO – With the women's volleyball team leading the way with six student-athletes honored, the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department was pleased to learn that 18 of its student-athletes from the five fall teams that play in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) were named to the league's All-Academic Team in their respective sports when the teams were announced earlier this week. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must have been enrolled at her respective CCAC institution for a minimum of one academic year, have completed at least 30 semester hours and boast no less than a 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA).

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University Athletics Department has created a YouTube channel to allow its fans and followers a central place to view all of its archived video profiles, interviews and highlights. Greg Pilafas, a senior intern with SXU Sports Information, spent the last few weeks transferring videos over and sorting them to this new location for fans to view from one source. New videos will be added to this channel as they become available so please become a subscriber today through YouTube's website. Go Cougars!

[SXU] SXU Athletics Partners with World Hyundai Matteson for Award

CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University Athletics has formed a partnership with World Hyundai in Matteson, Ill., to honor a different Cougar athlete each month based on their performance in their respective sport for the previous month. The SXU Office of Sports Information plans to accumulate statistics and honors for all of its athletes in season to determine eligible candidates for the monthly award. SXU Athletics plans to announce the selected athlete on its website and social media platforms at the beginning of each month starting on Monday, October 1, and the athlete will also be recognized publicly at a future Saint Xavier University Athletics home event.

Just call them the Southland Super Six. Six south suburban area coaches or former athletes were inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony Wednesday night at Hawthorne Race Course in Cicero. Former Brother Rice football star Mark Donahue, former Thornton football star Napoleon Harris, St. Xavier women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg, former Bloom track star Elzie Higginbottom, former Sandburg and DePaul basketball player (and current sports announcer) Sarah Kustok and Brother Rice wrestling coach Bill Weick were inducted.

[SXU] SXU Athletics Will Feature "Cougar Close-Ups" Starting Next Week

CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University Office of Sports Information will unveil a new feature for the start of the 2012-13 academic year with "Cougar Close-Ups," a video profile of some of your favorite SXU student-athletes. The first installment of "Cougar Close-Ups" is set to launch on Thursday, September 13, and will be released weekly on the Saint Xavier University Athletics website (www.sxucougars.com) as well as on SXU Athletics social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter). As the year progresses, fans of Cougar Athletics may have the opportunity to vote on who they want highlighted for upcoming "Cougar Close-Ups" through online and social media polls. Greg Pilafas, an intern with the Saint Xavier University Office of Sports Information, is expected to head the project as part of his senior internship for the SXU Communications Department.

CHICAGO – From the football team claiming the NAIA National Championship trophy for the first time in school history to the four other teams that qualified for the NAIA National Championships in their respective sports, the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department had no shortage of worthwhile accomplishments to boast about during the 2011-12 academic year. However, the Cougars also showcased that their national successes were not always limited to the field of play by posting seven of its student-athletes as prestigious Capital One Academic All-America selections. Out of the 557 collegiate institutions in all divisions of NCAA and NAIA that fielded at least one Capital One Academic All-America selection, SXU's seven honorees placed them in a tie with 15 other schools ahead of all, but the top 46 nationwide.

CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University athletic director and women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg is scheduled to enter the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, when the group holds its 16^th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner starting at 6 p.m. that evening at Hawthorne Race Course in Cicero. Hallberg is one of 20 honorees being inducted into the 2012 class, which includes a list of distinguished sports figures in former White Sox and professional football player Bo Jackson, NCAA champion University of Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari, Olympic gold medalist and Chicago Bandits star Jennie Finch, former Green Bay Packer and University of Notre Dame standout Paul Hornung and former DePaul University women's basketball standout and Comcast SportsNet reporter Sarah Kustok.

[SXU] Saint Xavier Football Media Guide Deemed NAIA's Best

St. Louis, Mo. – Following the lead of its national championship football team, the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department earned another national title when its 2011 football media guide was named "Best in the Nation" when the 2011-12 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Publication Contests results were recently released in conjunction with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-Sports Information Directors Association (NAIA-SIDA) Workshop in St. Louis, Mo. It was the first time that the football media guide earned the top spot in the football brochure category since SXU started submitting media guides for the contest in 2003. In addition to the football media guide award, Saint Xavier University Athletics also claimed third place in the Combined Basketball Brochure category for the second straight year for its 2011-12 men's and women's basketball media guide.

[SXU] Saint Xavier Athletics Achieves Unique Win Milestone

CHICAGO – Out of over 1,000 NCAA institutions from three divisions and nearly 300 NAIA member schools, the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department can boast what only one other four-year college or university in the nation can for the 2011-12 campaign. The Cougars compiled 12 or more wins in football (14-1), 30 or more victories in women's volleyball (30-5), 20 or more wins in both men's and women's basketball (23-9 & 24-9, respectively) and 30 or victories in both baseball and softball (35-23 & 37-16, respectively). Only NCAA Division III member University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in St. Paul, Minn., can also make that claim. The unique milestone is a testament to the overall success of both athletic programs, since it highlights a pair of sports from each of the three playing seasons (fall, winter and spring).

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University Athletics Department held its 2012 SXU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet Monday evening at the Shannon Center to honor 72 student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. Student-athletes recognized have maintained at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) through December 31, 2011, and each received either a bronze, silver or gold medallion as their award based on their respective GPA. In addition, seniors Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) and Michael Prosser (Rockton, Ill./Rockton-Hononegah) were named the 2011-12 SXU Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year. Young is majoring in pre-medicine and was a second team NAIA All-American as well as a first team honoree on the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-America Team for the SXU women's basketball team. Prosser is finishing up his major in business. In addition to helping lead the Cougar football team to the University's first national championship, Prosser earned a first team spot on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Football Team and was one of just 11 NAIA defensive players nationwide named to the 2011 American Football Coaches Association-NAIA Coaches' All-America Team.
