Head Coach: 7th Season
Vucinic is entering his seventh season as head coach at Saint Xavier University. In 2009, the SXU men's soccer team finished 13-5-1 overall and reached the semifinals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament. The Cougars also defeated No. 2 ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio), 1-0, and earned one of its highest ever national rankings climbing to No. 12 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. In his first season at the helm (2004), Vucinic led the Cougars to a 13-7-4 overall record and a trip to the NAIA Region VII semifinals where SXU lost a heartbreaker on penalty kicks to No. 5 ranked Judson University (Ill.). Prior to coming to SXU, he was interim head coach for the men's soccer program at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
In 2002, Vucinic assisted former Saint Xavier head coach Henry Barsch for one season before heading to North Central. He is currently also on the coaching staff of the Chicago Fire Premier Development League team as well as assisting with the Fire's Academy programs. Vucinic has coached at numerous soccer camps and clinics around the country providing him with a wealth of soccer knowledge to bestow upon the Cougar program and its players.
In addition to his coaching stints, Vucinic has also worked as a soccer broadcaster for Fox Sports as well as ESPN. He has provided play-by-play and analysis for professional soccer teams, such as the Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew and Cleveland Crunch as well as various high school teams in Illinois.
Vucinic is a 1983 graduate of Lewis University (Ill.) with a degree in business administration. He played soccer for the Flyers for four years and was a three-year starter at defender. He resides in Bridgeport.
Assistant Coach: 5th Season
Waters begins his fifth season as assistant coach of the Saint Xavier University men's soccer program. Prior to joining the SXU athletics staff, Waters served as head coach at Aurora University (Ill.), a NCAA Division III school in Aurora, Ill., from 1999-2003. In addition to his stint at Aurora University, he has also spent the last 14 years coaching a variety of club soccer teams and working at soccer camps and clinics throughout the Chicagoland area.
Waters was a midfielder/forward at Eastern Illinois University from 1989-93. During his career at EIU, he was a three-time member of the Mid-Continent All-Academic Team. Waters received a marketing degree from Eastern Illinois in 1993, while also earning a minor in speech.
Waters resides on the North side of Chicago and also works full-time for Wirtz Beverage in Elk Grove, Ill., in addition to his coaching duties at SXU.
Assistant Coach: 6th Season
Harkness is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Cougar men's soccer team. Prior to working at SXU, he served as head coach for Southwest United, an 18-and-under club soccer team in Oak Forest, Ill., from 1998-2005. Harkness also was the head women's soccer coach at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Ill., from 2000-2004. From 1996-2000, he served as assistant boy's soccer coach at Brother Rice High School in Chicago, where he played from 1986-90.
Harkness was a standout player at Eastern Illinois University from 1990-94. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for the Chicago Power and Detroit Rockers of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) as well as the Chicago Stingers of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL).
Harkness lives with his wife, Pamela, in Downer's Grove. The couple had twins, Jimmy and Karly, in the fall of 2005. In addition to coaching at SXU, Harkness also trades commodities at the Chicago Board of Trade.
