St. Thomas, Virgin Islands - Scoring 54 points and shooting 54 percent (20-for-37) from the field in the first half, the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team cruised to a convincing 73-55 win over No. 19 ranked Ottawa University (Kan.) Monday in its second game of the St. Thomas Tournament in the Virgin Islands, U.S.A. Senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) led the Cougars in scoring for the second straight day finishing with 24 points behind a 10-for-13 shooting performance from the field. At 11-1, this is the best start in SXU women's basketball history.
The SXU defense played a big role again limiting Ottawa to just a 30 percent field-goal percentage in the game (17-of-56) and helping to force 27 Braves turnovers. Junior forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and freshman forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) each chipped in 10 points in the winning effort, while senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) posted nine points and seven assists. The Cougars led by as many as 24 points in the second half after jumping out to a 46-24 lead at the halftime break.
Saint Xavier (11-1 overall) wraps up play at the St. Thomas Tournament on Tuesday, December 19, with a match-up against No. 6 ranked Freed-Hardemann University (Tenn.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start eastern time.
