St. Thomas, Virgin Islands - Defense told the story as No. 9 Saint Xavier University held No. 20 ranked Aquinas College (Mich.) to just 19 second-half points to capture a 66-41 victory Sunday in NAIA women's basketball action at the St. Thomas Tournament in the Virgin Islands, USA. Senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) led all scorers with 17 points as the Cougars won their sixth straight game to improve to 10-1 overall this season.

Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) had a solid all-around outing for SXU with 14 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds, while freshman guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) came off the bench to contribute 14 points on a 6-for-10 clip from the field. Junior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) led the Cougars on the boards with a game-high-tying eight rebounds.

SXU had the lead, 31-22, at the halftime break thanks in part to a 26 percent (7-for-27) shooting percentage by Aquinas in the first half. The Saints finished the game shooting just 29 percent from the field (16-for-55), including 2-for-19 (11 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Cougars also took advantage of many of the 27 Aquinas turnovers scoring 25 of its 66 points in the game off Saints miscues.

Saint Xavier (10-1 overall) continues play in the St. Thomas Tournament on Monday, December 18, with a game against No. 19 ranked Ottawa University (Kan.). The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. eastern time in St. Thomas.
