Joliet, Ill. - The No. 18 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team earned a spot Thursday in the 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament championship game at the Inwood Sports Complex in Joliet, Ill. Unfortunately for the Cougars, it took two games, instead of one, to qualify. SXU went up against No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Thursday's 6 p.m. game and fell, 8-0, in five innings. The Cougars were then forced to take on No. 3 seeded University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the 8 p.m. game to determine who would face ONU in Friday's 5 p.m. championship. Saint Xavier defeated the Fighting Saints, 11-2, in five innings.
Nothing seemed to go right for SXU in Thursday's first game against Olivet Nazarene. The Cougars racked up an uncharacteristic three errors and only tallied two team hits in the ballgame. ONU, on the other hand, recorded 12 hits en route to its eight-run output, including a five-run fourth inning. Junior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) took the loss on the mound for Saint Xavier pitching the first 3.2 innings and giving up eight hits, six runs (five earned) and three walks. It was only her fifth loss of the season (19-5).
SXU got back on the right foot in its second game Thursday against University of St. Francis (Ill.) collecting 14 hits for 11 runs, while keeping the Saints' bats in check. Junior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) was 3-for-3 at the plate for Saint Xavier with a double, a home run, three runs scored and six RBI. Sophomore centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) also turned in three hits along with two runs scored, while senior first baseman Christina Jesse (Varna, Ill./Illinois Valley CC) and sophomore catcher Lindsey Hall (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) both hit home runs. Wilson picked up her 20th win of the season (20-5) against USF pitching all five innings and allowing just six hits and two unearned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (40-16 overall) will face No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). in the 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament championship Friday at 5 p.m. at the Inwood Sports Complex in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars will have to defeat ONU twice in order to claim the CCAC tourney title.
