Hastings, Neb. - The Saint Xavier University volleyball team had a rough weekend dropping three of its four matches at the 2006 Hastings College Bronco Invitational in Hastings, Neb., and losing the services of its offensive leader when senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) suffered a severe ankle injury in the first match Friday. The Cougars (7-7 overall, 2-0 CCAC) lost both matches Friday falling to Dordt College (Neb.) and Grand View College (Iowa) before defeating Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) and losing to Concordia University (Neb.) on Saturday.

SXU dropped three straight games to Dordt 28-30, 21-30, 13-30, in Friday's first match despite team-highs of 10 kills and 21 digs from Buchmeier. Junior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and sophomore right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) each recorded eight kills in the losing effort, while Breshock also finished with 12 total blocks. Junior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied eight blocks for the Cougars and junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) had 30 set assists.

In their second match Friday against Grand View, the Cougars fell in four games 23-30, 24-30, 30-16, 23-30. Senior outside hitter Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) led the offensive attack for SXU finishing with 15 kills, while Looby and senior defensive specialist Danielle Keller (Worth, Ill./Shepard) each posted 16 digs. Carls also played well for Saint Xavier finishing with seven kills and eight total blocks.

The Cougars bounced back in their Saturday morning match defeating Dakota Wesleyan in three games 30-23, 30-21, 30-19 behind 14 kills and 13 digs from junior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC). Looby was tough as well for SXU putting up 36 set assists and 11 digs, while Pedigo finished with nine kills, seven digs, and five solo blocks.

Despite nine kills from Synowiecki, Saint Xavier could not carry the momentum over to its final match of the tourney losing to Concordia University (Neb.) in three games 19-30, 25-30, 20-30. Looby played well for the Cougars totaling 25 set assists and 18 digs, while Breshock racked up 11 total blocks and seven kills.

Saint Xavier (7-7 overall, 2-0 CCAC) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 19, with a match against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Start time for Tuesday's match is 7 p.m.
