Men's Basketball - Tue, Oct. 26, 2004
Olathe, Kan. -- Both the Saint Xavier University men's and women's basketball teams were ranked among the nation's top 25 when the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released its annual preseason Division I rankings Tuesday. The men's team earned the No. 20 spot, while the women sat at No. 24. Both teams earned spots at the NAIA National Tournament last March, but fell in first-round action.

On the men's side, the Cougars finished the 2003-04 season with an overall record of 25-11 and earned second place in both the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season rankings and postseason tournament behind Robert Morris College (Ill.). After failing to receive the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament with a conference tournament championship, SXU received an at-large bid to the national playoffs and fell in first round action to No. 4 ranked Concordia (Calif.), 82-72, in Kansas City, Mo.

The Saint Xavier University women's team closed out its 2003-04 season with a 26-10 overall mark and earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn., by defeating University of St. Francis (Ill.), 91-76, in the championship game of the CCAC Tournament. The Cougars were matched up against No. 3 ranked Vanguard University (Calif.) in first-round action and dropped the game, 63-51, to end the season.

Both teams open their seasons with big exhibition games on the road in early November. The men will take on NCAA Division I opponent DePaul University (Ill.) on Thursday, November 4, at 8 p.m. at the DePaul Athletic Center. The women will open against Illinois State University at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill., on Sunday, November 7, at 2:05 p.m.
