Bloomington, Ill. - Despite 16 points by sophomore Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), No. 16 Saint Xavier University could not slow down Illinois Wesleyan University, the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division III, Monday falling, 81-61, in non-conference men's basketball action at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. Senior forward Keelan Amelianovich led IWU with a game-high 26 points shooting an impressive 9-for-13 from the field.
The Cougars (7-3 overall) kept pace with the Fighting Titans for most of the first half with Bolger scoring 10 of SXU's first 18 points. With six minutes remaining in the first half, Illinois Wesleyan began a 15-6 scoring run to close out the half and Saint Xavier went into halftime down, 40-29. The Fighting Titans shot 55 percent (16-for-29) from the field in the first half.
Saint Xavier could not get its offense rolling in the second half shooting just 35 percent (10-for-29) after halftime. The Cougars pulled to within 10 points, 63-53, with eight minutes remaining in regulation, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way. Senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) finished with 14 points for SXU, while sophomore guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) and freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in Monday's game.
Saint Xavier (7-3 overall) returns to action on Thursday, December 1, to face University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) in non-conference action in Springfield, Ill. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
