Men's Basketball - Thu, Jan. 12, 2006
Hammond, Ind. - Despite 23 points from freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not get a victory in its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener falling 77-73 in overtime to Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) Wednesday in Hammond, Ind. The Cougars (12-7 overall, 0-1 CCAC) could not convert key shots down the stretch in the second half that would have put the game out of reach for the Peregrines.

In addition to Genova, two other SXU players scored in double figures in Wednesday's loss with sophomore forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) recording 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) tacked on 10 points. Saint Xavier shot just 44 percent (8-for-18) from the free-throw line in the game and 19 percent (5-for-26) from beyond the three-point arc in the game.

The Cougars led by as many as 13 points in the second half after building a 31-24 halftime lead. However, Purdue University-Calumet mounted a late rally in the second half and with two seconds remaining in regulation, freshman forward Charles Cruz hit a lay-up to tie the game, 64-64. In overtime, sophomore guard James Washington got fouled driving to the basket with 12 seconds left to play and hit both his free throws to give the Peregrines a 75-73 lead. A turnover by SXU in the ensuing inbounds pass sealed the victory for Purdue-Calumet.

Saint Xavier (12-7 overall, 0-1 CCAC) returns to action on Wednesday, January 18, with a CCAC home game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
