Tampa, Fla. -- Despite a team-high 12 points from senior forward Michael Rojas (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team fell 65-48 to the University of Tampa (Fla.) Thursday at the Martinez Sports Center in Tampa, Fla. The Cougars fall to 12-3 overall on the season and end a four-game win streak with the loss.
Tampa led 24-22 at the half and came out strong in the second half with the Spartans shooting 52 percent from the field after the break. SXU shot only 36 percent (17-for-47) from the field in the game and only connected on three of its 16 three-point attempts (19 percent). Senior guards Rick Romeli (Lansing, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Phillip Watson (Chicago, Ill./Von Stueben) as well as junior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) each scored eight points in the loss.
Saint Xavier will participate in the Warner Southern College (Fla.) Tournament over the next five days. The Cougars take on Evangel University on Friday, December 31, at 2 p.m. (eastern) to open the event.
