Kenosha, Wisc. - Senior leftfielder Melissa Romano (Chicago Heights, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) hit a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning of game two to help lead the No. 18 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team to a 3-1 win over non-conference foe University of Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday in Kenosha, Wisc. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not pick up the doubleheader sweep Thursday falling 7-1 to the Rangers in the first game.
Junior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) provided all of SXU's offense in game one hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to finish 1-for-3 in the game. UW-Parkside outhit Saint Xavier, 12-4, in the ballgame en route to the 7-1 victory. Junior righthander Kim Garner (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) got the starting nod on the mound for the Cougars pitching the first 4.1 innings and allowing nine hits and six runs with three strikeouts. The loss drops Garner to 6-2 overall on the season.
SXU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two when Romano crushed her big homer finishing the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. The Cougars tacked on their third and final run of the game in the fourth inning when sophomore centerfield Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) recorded a two-out RBI single to bring junior designated hitter Rhea Minas (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) home from third.
The Rangers answered in the bottom of the fourth with a run off a RBI single, but it was all they would score the rest of the way. Freshman rightie Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) pitched all seven innings for SXU to earn the game two win. She gave up seven hits, an earned run and two walks while collecting three strikeouts. Bartels now sits at 4-5 overall on the season.
Saint Xavier (38-15 overall) has wrapped up its regular season and will begin play in the 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament next week. The No. 1 seeded Cougars will face either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed on Wednesday, May 4, at 4 p.m. in Joliet, Ill.
