Romeoville, Ill. - Senior second baseman Maura Ryan (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) finished the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team to a doubleheader split with non-conference foe Lewis University (Ill.) Tuesday in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars defeated the Flyers, 8-4, in game one, but could not the momentum into the nightcap falling, 8-0.
In Tuesday's first game, Ryan helped pace the SXU offensive attack at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while sophomores Samantha Lovato (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) and Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) also each recorded two hits in the game. Junior first baseman Megan Stluka (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) went 1-for-3 in game one with a home run and three RBI. The Cougars outhit Lewis, 11-5, and scored all eight of their runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings of the ballgame.
Junior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) earned the game one win on the mound for Saint Xavier pitching all seven innings and allowing just five hits and four runs (two earned) with three strikeouts. With the win, Wilson improved her win-loss record to 18-4 on the season.
SXU had trouble stringing together hits in Tuesday's second game and Lewis took advantage outhitting the Cougars, 17-6, en route to the 8-0 six-inning victory. Ryan led Saint Xavier at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing. Lewis took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings and tacked on two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win. Junior rightie Kim Garner (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) got the starting nod for SXU and took the loss pitching 1.2 innings allowing five hits and four runs. Freshman Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) came in as a reliever and threw the final four innings giving up 12 hits and four runs with a strikeout.
Saint Xavier (37-14 overall) heads to Kenosha, Wisc., on Thursday, April 28, to face University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game of the twinbill will begin at 3 p.m.
