CHICAGO - Although she only finished with one hit on the day, Saint Xavier University junior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) made sure it count crushing a one-out, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give SXU the 10-0 victory in the second game of its doubleheader with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) Thursday at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The No. 19 ranked Cougars also won game one of the twinbill, 5-1, and are currently 28-12 overall and 13-2 in league play this season.
In Thursday's first game, sophomore designated hitter Samantha Lovato (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) and sophomore catcher Lindsey Hall (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) provided most of the Saint Xavier offense. Lovato finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Hall went 2-for-3 with a home run and all five RBI. The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the 0-0 tie and, after RMC answered with a run in the fifth, SXU tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth to seal the win. Junior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) earned the victory on the mound going all seven innings and allowing just four hits and an unearned run with five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Kilduff finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI to pace the Saint Xavier offensive attack. Sophomore rightfielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a RBI, while senior leftfielder Melissa Romano (Chicago Heights, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was also 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. After three scoreless innings, SXU scored a run in the fourth, five runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth en route to the 10-0 victory scattering seven hits in the ballgame. Junior pitcher Kim Garner (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) picked up the complete game shutout win for the Cougars going six innings and allowing seven hits and a walk, while striking out three RMC batters.
Saint Xavier takes a break from its conference slate this weekend hosting Grand View College (Iowa) on Saturday, April 16, for a doubleheader at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
