Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind a huge day at the plate by sophomore catcher Lindsey Hall (Elgin, Ill./Larkin), the Saint Xavier University softball team broke a school record for consecutive victories by winning its 17th straight game Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars won game one, 9-3, and then picked up the 8-6 victory in the nightcap to improve to 20-9 overall and a perfect 9-0 in league play. The previous record was 16 games set during the 2003 season.
In game one, Hall finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI, while junior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) also went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI. Hall and Kilduff both hit their home runs during a five-run, fourth inning which erased a 1-0 lead for ONU. SXU tacked on two more runs in each of the final two innings of the game to secure the victory. Junior pitcher Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) earned the win (10-3) on the mound for Saint Xavier pitching all seven innings and giving up 15 hits, three runs (two earned), while striking out four batters.
Hall stayed hot at the plate in game two hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, home run, and three RBI. Sophomore centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was 2-for-5 in the game with a run scored and a RBI, while senior second baseman Maura Ryan (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. With the game tied 5-5 after three innings of play, the Cougars scored three runs over the next two innings paced by RBI from Marie Barker, senior leftfielder Melissa Romano (Chicago Heights, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and junior first baseman Megan Stluka (Beecher, Ill./Beecher).
Sophomore rightie Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) picked up the win for Saint Xavier going six innings and allowing 11 hits, six runs and no walks, while recording one strikeout. Wilson came in for Bodi in the seventh inning and allowed one hit and picking up the key final out in the ballgame with a strikeout, her only one of the inning.
SXU continues its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Thursday, April 7, with a 3 p.m. road doubleheader against Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill. The doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.
