CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University volleyball team split a pair of matches at its own nine-team Cougar Invitational Friday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (4-3 overall) got off to a hot start defeating St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in three games 30-28, 30-26, 30-27, but could not carry the momentum into the second match falling in a heartbreaker to No. 24 ranked Cornerstone University (Mich.) in five games 21-30, 20-30, 30-27, 30-25, 10-15.

In the win over St. Ambrose, senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) led SXU with team-highs of 14 kills and 15 digs. The Cougars also had a solid offensive output from sophomore right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) with nine kills, while junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) provided the set-ups finishing with 39 assists.

Buchmeier was tough again in the second match against Cornerstone posting 21 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) was tough defensively leading the Cougars with 22 digs, while Looby finished the match with 58 assists and 12 digs.

Saint Xavier (4-3 overall) wraps up play at the two-day 2006 SXU Cougar Invitational on Saturday, September 9. The Cougars will play Park University (Mo.) in a 10 a.m. match before taking on Walsh University (Ohio) at 2 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
