CHICAGO - Despite a combined 26 kills by senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its final two matches of its own nine-team Cougar Invitational Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (5-4 overall) won their morning match with Park University (Mo.) in three games 30-26, 30-25, 30-26, but dropped its afternoon match to Walsh University (Ohio) in four games 30-20, 27-30, 25-30, 12-30.
SXU was led offensively by Buchmeier, who finished with 12 kills, in the opening match win against Park. In addition, junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) had a solid overall outing for the Cougars recording 40 assists and 10 digs. Buchmeier and sophomore right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) each finished with 14 kills in the Cougars' loss to Walsh. Buchmeier also led SXU defensively with 21 digs, while Looby finished with 43 assists.
Saint Xavier (5-4 overall) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 12, with a home match against Judson College (Ill.). Start time for Tuesday's match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
