Romeoville, Ill. -- Sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) paced the Saint Xavier University volleyball team with a team-high 12 kills over the weekend at the Lewis University Flyer Festival in Romeoville, Ill., but the Cougars could not record a victory over their two matches. SXU lost its first match Friday to Saginaw Valley State University (Mich.) in three games, 30-23, 31-29, 30-22, and dropped its second match of the event to Winona State University (Minn.) in three games as well, 30-25, 30-18, 30-18.

In game one, Pedigo and sophomore outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) each led the Cougars with seven kills. Pedigo, along with sophomore middle blocker Kristen Lake (Plymouth, Mich./Canton), each finished the match with game-highs of eight digs. Junior captain and starting setter Amy Stephens (Bowen, Ill./Camp Point Central) recorded 28 assists for the Cougars in the match.

In SXU's second game of the weekend, freshman middle blocker Kate Eckhoff (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) led the offensive attack for the Cougars with a team-high nine kills, while Pedigo contributed five. Freshman setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) paced Saint Xavier in digs and assists with eight and 26, respectively.

"Due to injuries and other external factors, we were forced to use a different line-up than the one we have practiced with the last couple of weeks," said SXU head volleyball coach Bob Heersema. "A lot of our young players stepped up this weekend in starting roles and played well. We just have to continue to work on getting better every time we step on the court."

The Cougars will host their home opener Tuesday, September 7, at the Shannon Center against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Illinois Institute of Technology. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
