CHICAGO - Behind a combined 19 kills and 30 digs by senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its two matches at the 2006 Lewis University Flyer Festival in Romeoville, Ill., over the weekend. In its first match Friday, the Cougars swept NCAA Division II foe Shepherd University (W.V.) in three games (33-31, 30-19, 34-32). In its second match of the event, SXU fell in four games (34-36, 30-28, 21-30, 26-30) to NCAA Division II Winona State University (Minn.).

In the win over Shepherd University, Buchmeier finished with 16 kills in addition to 11 digs and four total blocks. Junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) also played well in Saint Xavier's first match recording team-highs in both assists (35) and digs (14). Senior outside hitter Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) finished with eight kills and 13 digs for the Cougars in the winning effort.

The second match against Winona State University (Minn.) proved to be a tough one with SXU falling in four games. Buchmeier and junior Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) each posted 13 kills to lead the offensive attack for Saint Xavier. Defensively, Buchmeier led the Cougars with 19 digs, while Pedigo and senior defensive specialist Danielle Keller (Worth, Ill./Shepard) each recorded 15 digs. Looby finished the second match with 41 assists.

SXU (1-2 overall) returns to action on Tuesday, September 5, with its conference opener at home against Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.). The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
