Mt. Pleasant, Iowa - Despite impressive individual performances by junior outside hitters Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) and Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won only one of its four matches over the weekend at Iowa Wesleyan College's Avenue of the Saints Volleyball Tournament in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The Cougars (2-3 overall) defeated Trinity International University (Ill.) in four games Saturday, but dropped matches to Park University (Mo.), Loyola University (La.) and host Iowa Wesleyan College, respectively.
SXU dropped its first match of the tourney to Park University in four games 27-30, 30-25, 13-30, 20-30. Buchmeier finished the match with a team-high 13 kills, while Pedigo followed with 11. Sophomore setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) recorded 18 digs in the losing effort. In Friday's second match against Loyola University (La.), the Cougars fell in three games 23-30, 25-30, 27-30. Pedigo led Saint Xavier with 10 kills, while junior Danielle Keller (Worth, Ill./Alan B. Shepard) and sophomore Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied 12 digs apiece.
Against Trinity International on Saturday, SXU picked up a four-game match win 15-30, 30-24, 30-20, 30-23. Buchmeier led Saint Xavier again in kills with 15, while Looby finished with a team-high 14 digs. In its final match against No. 14 ranked Iowa Wesleyan College, the Cougars played tough, but fell in four games 19-30, 30-22, 15-30, 28-30. Buchmeier led the offensive attack for Saint Xavier with 14 kills, while sophomore Kate Eckhoff (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) finished with 10. Buchmeier and freshman Mallory Winkler (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) also recorded 11 digs apiece.
Saint Xavier returns to action on Friday, September 2, to take part in the Lewis University Flyer Festival this weekend in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars open with a 3 p.m. match Friday against Minnesota State University-Mankato.
