CHICAGO - Despite a team-high 16 kills by sophomore Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team could not win its season opener falling in five games to Indiana Institute of Technology in non-conference action Thursday at the Shannon Center. SXU dropped the first game of the match, 23-30, but bounced back in games two and three winning 30-27 and 30-23, respectively. However, the Cougars could not carry that momentum into game four and dropped the final two games 28-30 and 10-15.

Senior Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) also played well for SXU recording 12 kills and eight digs. In addition, junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was solid for the Cougars with team-highs of 17 digs, 47 assists, and three service aces. Indiana Tech was led by freshman Heather Garmire, who finished with 15 kills.

Saint Xavier heads to Romeoville, Ill., on Friday, September 1, to participate in the 2006 Flyer Festival Volleyball Tournament. The Cougars will play two matches Friday at the Flyer Festival matching up against Shepherd University (W.V.) at 11 a.m. followed by a match against Winona State University (Minn.) at 1 p.m.
