CHICAGO - Behind a team-high 11 kills for junior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won its season-opening match against Notre Dame College (Ohio) in three games Wednesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars won the best-of-five game match 30-22, 30-25, and 30-24 to improve to 1-0 on the new season.
In addition to Buchmeier, several other SXU players had impressive individual performances in Wednesday's victory. Sophomore middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./Thorton Fractional South) finished with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) turned in eight kills and nine digs. Senior libero Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) led the Cougars in digs with 18.
Saint Xavier heads to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, this weekend to take part in Iowa Wesleyan College's Avenue of the Saints Volleyball Tournament. The Cougars will play twice on Friday, August 26, with a 4 p.m. match against Park University (Mo.) and a match against Loyola University (La.) at 7 p.m.
