Hammond, Ind. - Senior guard Phillip Watson (Chicago, Ill./Von Stueben) scored a game-high 14 points to lead the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to a 60-48 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road win over Purdue University-Calumet Saturday in Hammond, Ind. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 21-4 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the Peregrines fall to 10-17 overall and 3-4 in the CCAC.
In addition to Watson, three other SXU players scored in double figures in Saturday's win. Senior guard Rick Romeli (Lansing, Ill./Marian Catholic) and junior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) each finished with 13 points, while junior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) chipped in 11. Watson led the Cougars on the boards with five rebounds, while Romeli and Watson recorded three steals apiece in the winning effort.
Ahead 35-23 at the half, Saint Xavier could not extend its lead in the second half. SXU shot 46 percent (21-for-46) from the field in the game, but had trouble getting rebounding with PUC winning the boards battle, 40-22. The Cougars took care of the ball on offense committing just eight turnovers in the game compared to 19 miscues by the Peregrines.
Saint Xavier heads to the Gentile Center on the campus of Loyola University in Chicago to take on CCAC foe and No. 4 ranked Robert Morris College (Ill.) in a make-up game postponed on January 22 due to inclement weather. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
