CHICAGO - Senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, two runs scored, and two RBI to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to an 8-3 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Thursday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars (11-20 overall/3-1 CCAC) collected their third straight win after starting the season with an 8-20 mark.
Junior catcher Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) also had a good game at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI, while sophomore designated hitter Joe Miller (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) also went 2-for-4 and recorded a triple and two RBI. Junior righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned his first win of the season (1-4) pitching the first seven innings and allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), and a walk with five strikeouts.
SXU jumped out to an early lead in the game scoring six of its eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and the final two in the second inning. Christy recorded his two-run homer in the team's second at-bat following a lead-off walk by junior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Miller's triple later in the same inning plated two more runs for the Cougars. A RBI single by senior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) and a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) scored SXU's final two runs in the second inning.
Saint Xavier (11-20 overall, 3-1 CCAC) continues its CCAC slate on Friday, April 7, with a road game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). Game time is set for 3 p.m. at E.J. Block Stadium in East Chicago.
