Men's Volleyball - Tue, Jan. 12, 2010
CHICAGO - Under the direction of head coach Robert Heersema, the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball program will begin its first season Wednesday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars will host their historic opening match at 7 p.m. Wednesday and will face NCAA Division III D'Youville College (N.Y.). SXU has 12 Chicagoland area players on its active roster for the 2010 season, which runs from January until April. Men's volleyball is the 13th varsity sport carried by the SXU Athletics Department after being added back in June 2009.

"This is an exciting time for me personally and for Saint Xavier Athletics as a whole," said Heersema, who has also served as SXU's women's volleyball coach for the past 23 seasons. "Our guys are thrilled about the opportunity to be a part of something new and from what I've seen in preseason practices, I think we will be very competitive this year. We will match up against a lot of established programs in this first season. However, I think with the players we have now, plus being located in a recruiting hotbed like Chicago, the future looks extremely bright for this program."

Since the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) does not include men's volleyball, the Cougars will compete in the Eastern Conference of the Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC). The MAMWIC includes some area teams, such as Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) and Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.).
