Milwaukee, Wis. - Despite three saves by senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 20 ranked Saint Xavier University men's soccer team fell victim to a penalty kick goal by Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) just 15 seconds before halftime and lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis. It is the second straight 1-0 loss for the Cougars, who started the 2009 season with a 5-1-0 mark and were ranked as high as No. 12 nationally. The game-winning penalty kick was taken by senior defender Paul Dugdale at the 44:45 mark of the first half.
SXU held the advantage on shots-on-goal Saturday posting five compared to just four by the Wolves. Both teams racked up 13 shots in the game, but the Cougars recorded more corner kicks, 6-1, with all six coming in first-half action. CSU freshman keeper Max Leblond finished with five saves to secure the shutout.
Saint Xavier (5-3-0 overall/1-1-0 CCAC) continues its CCAC schedule on Wednesday, September 30, with a home game against Holy Cross College (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
