CHICAGO - Led by a game-best eight kills by freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team rolled to a three-game match win over visiting Grace College (Ind.) Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (1-0 overall) had little trouble pulling away in all three games of the match winning 25-11, 25-18 and 25-13, respectively. SXU was sharp from the onset racking up 27 combined kills, while only committing seven attack errors in the match.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) also played well for Saint Xavier recording five kills and a game-best three solo blocks, while freshman middle blocker Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) was tough as well posting six kills, five service aces, seven digs and two solo blocks in her debut with the Cougars. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) kept the SXU offense in sync racking up 22 assists on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Lawson with six kills led Grace College.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) heads to Dearborn, Mich., this weekend to participate in the two-day University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Collegiate Challenge. The Cougars open the event at 3:15 p.m. eastern time Friday against Davenport University (Mich.).
