Men's Basketball - Tue, Nov. 25, 2008
Springfield, Ill. - Despite trailing by as many as 21 points in the second half, a late rally attempt by Saint Xavier University fell just short in an 89-85 loss to No. 23 University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) in NAIA men's basketball action Tuesday night in Springfield, Ill. The Cougars (3-4 overall) shot 58 percent from the field (18-for-31) and scored 47 points after the break, but could not completely overcome the big deficit set up by the strong first half play of the Prairie Stars.
Senior guard/forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) came off the bench for SXU and led all scorers with 21 points, including 19 points in second half action. Campbell also led Saint Xavier on the boards with 11 rebounds. Junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) also played well Tuesday finishing with 19 points for the Cougars. Also scoring in double figures for SXU were senior guard Nick Wirth (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) with 13 points and senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) tacking on 11 points.
Saint Xavier (3-4 overall) continues its season on Saturday, November 29, with a home game against East-West University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
