CHICAGO - Despite a four-hit outing at the plate for senior rightfielder Pat Flynn (Chicago, Ill./University of Illinois), the Saint Xavier University baseball team could not overcome three errors in the field dropping a tough non-conference game to Indiana Institute of Technology Monday, 7-6, at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 24-18 overall on the season.
Flynn finished Monday's game 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while senior catcher Carlos Campos (Stickney, Ill./Morton) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. SXU outhit Indiana Tech, 13-12, in the game and had a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth inning. However, two Cougar errors in the inning helped the Warriors move runners into scoring position and a back-to-back singles plated three runs narrowing the SXU lead to a run, 4-3.
A solo homer by Indiana Tech junior first baseman Jake Stambazze tied the game, 4-4, in the sixth inning and the Warriors tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh. Junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth to trim Indiana Tech's lead to two, 7-5, and Campos picked up a no-out RBI groundout in the ninth to close within a run, 7-6.
Sophomore righthander Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) got the starting nod for SXU pitching the first six innings and giving up seven hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts. Freshman leftie Jake Curran (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) took the loss in relief for the Cougars pitching two innings and allowing five hits and three earned runs with a walk and a strikeout.
Saint Xavier returns to Ferrell Field on Wednesday, April 27, for a conference game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at 3:30 p.m.
