Men's Basketball - Mon, Oct. 17, 2005
CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University women's volleyball coach Bob Heersema and men's basketball coach Tom O'Malley were both inducted into the 2005 class of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Hall of Fame Sunday at the Butler Reception Room on SXU's Chicago campus. With the additions of Heersema and O'Malley, Saint Xavier University now has a total of six inductees in the CCAC Hall of Fame, which began in 1991.

"The athletic department at Saint Xavier is very proud of the accomplishments that Bob Heersema and Tom O'Malley have achieved in both their CCAC and NAIA coaching careers," said SXU Athletics Director Bob Hallberg. "Both were inducted not only for the significant amount of victories they have attained over the years, but also for their leadership qualities both on and off the playing field."

Heersema is in his 19th season as head coach of the Cougar women's volleyball program. His teams have posted 390 wins during his career. In 1989, 1998 and 2000, Heersema was named the CCAC Coach of the Year. In 1989 and 1998, he was the NAIA District 20 Coach of the Year, and the NAIA Region VII Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Heersema has coached two NAIA All-Americans and led his squads to three conference championships (1997, 1998, and 2000) and one national tournament appearance (2000).

Entering his ninth year at the helm of the Saint Xavier University men's basketball program, O'Malley has put together some impressive seasons. However, the 2004-05 season may have been his finest ever with the Cougars earning a school record-tying 30 wins and posting their best-ever finish at the NAIA National Tournament with an Elite Eight appearance. O'Malley has a 212-73 overall record at SXU and his teams have averaged 26 wins a season during his eight-year tenure.

Besides Heerema and O'Malley, six other CCAC coaches made up the 2005 class of CCAC Hall of Fame inductees. These included: Al Bruehl (Robert Morris College men's basketball coach), Denny Fox (Cardinal Stritch University men's basketball coach), Elliot Johnson (Olivet Nazarene University baseball coach), Rich Panella (Cardinal Stritch University women's basketball coach), Ritchie Richardson (Olivet Nazarene University softball coach) and Brenda Williams (Olivet Nazarene University volleyball coach).

The previous four CCAC Hall of Fame members from Saint Xavier University were former softball coach Lynn O'Linski (1991), former baseball coach John Morrey (1991), former men's basketball coach Mike Keasler (1992), and current baseball coach Mike Dooley (2002).
