Orlando, Fla. - Paced by a three-hit shutout by junior pitcher Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team picked up two victories in its first two games of the season Sunday in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (2-0 overall) defeated Philadelphia University of Pennsylvania (Pa.), 8-0, in its first game Sunday and then held on to take a 3-2 victory from Adelphi University (N.Y.).
Shearer threw all five innings of game one and allowed three hits and no walks, while striking out three batters. Sophomore right fielder Holly Kennedy (Bloomington, Ill./University) helped lead the offensive attack with a two-RBI triple, while senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) and junior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) each chipped in two hits in the winning effort.
In game two, freshman second baseman Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) racked up three hits and two RBI to lead SXU to the 3-2 win. Senior pitcher Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) earned the victory on the mound pitching all seven innings and giving up five hits and two earned runs, while striking out six batters.
Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) continues its Florida trip on Monday with a 12 p.m. (central) game against No. 13 ranked Tiffin University. The Cougars then wrap up Monday with a 2 p.m. (central) match-up with No. 1 ranked (NCAA Division II) Lock Haven-University of Pennsylvania (Pa.).
