Palos Heights, Ill. - Led by senior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township West) with game-highs of 24 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists, the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 76-73 overtime road win over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in non-conference action Wednesday in Palos Heights, Ill. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 2-1 this season, while the Trolls drop to 1-2 overall.
In addition to Saunders, freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) also played well for SXU turning in 16 points and four rebounds, while junior guard James Hoffmann (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished with 10 points and four rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Lawrence Weller led Trinity Christian with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The game stayed close throughout with neither establishing a comfortable lead. With 16 seconds remaining in the second half, TCC stole the inbound pass and scored the game-tying bucket to send the game to overtime, 68-68. In the extra period, the teams continued to trade baskets. With 30 seconds remaining and SXU clinging to a one-point lead, the Cougars got a huge blocked shot and recovered the defensive rebound, which led to an immediate foul. After hitting its two free-throw attempts, SXU was able to hold in the final seconds to seal the three-point victory, 76-73.
SXU (2-1 overall) will head to Davenport, Iowa, to take part in the two-day St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Men's Basketball Tournament beginning on Friday, November 11. The Cougars open the tourney with a 5:30 p.m. game against Taylor University (Ind.).
