Men's Basketball - Mon, Nov. 14, 2005
Davenport, Iowa - Senior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township West) was tough to stop with a combined 30 points and 16 rebounds over two games, but the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team still split its two games at the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Tournament in Davenport, Iowa, over the weekend. The Cougars (3-2 overall) fell to Taylor University (Ind.) in Friday's game, 56-47, but bounced back in their Saturday match-up with host St. Ambrose winning, 81-59.
In SXU's loss to Taylor, the offense could not get into a rhythm shooting only 34 percent (15-for-44) from the field in the game, including a 4-for-20 showing (20 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Saunders led the Cougars with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) also scored in double figures with 10 points. Saint Xavier led 27-23 at halftime, but shot only 25 percent (4-for-16) in the second half as Taylor outscored SXU, 33-20, after the break.
Behind a game-high 19 points by Saunders on Saturday, Saint Xavier got back on track against St. Ambrose shooting 48 percent from the field (29-for-60). Sophomore forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) had his best outing of the young season with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while freshman guard Darin Riddle (Fortville, Ind./Mount Vernon) posted a new career-high with 15 points shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. The Cougars took a 46-33 lead at halftime and never looked back outscoring the Fighting Bees, 35-26, in the second half.
SXU (3-2 overall) will return to action on Tuesday, November 22, with a non-conference home game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
