CHICAGO - Senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) showed off his leadership skills this weekend guiding the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to a pair of wins over East-West University and Huntington University, respectively, in the SXU Classic at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Over the two games, Reiter scored 53 points on 21-for-29 shooting (72 percent) from the floor. The Cougars improve to 7-2 overall with the victories and have won five straight games.
In Saint Xavier's first game Friday against East-West (4-6), Reiter nearly recorded a triple-double finishing with a game-high 30 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists to highlight a 129-93 victory. Sophomore forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) also had an impressive outing picking up a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) tacked on 20 points, including six three-pointers, to aid the winning effort. The game was never in doubt as SXU cruised to a 60-38 halftime lead. The Cougars shot an impressive 57 percent from the field (44-for-77) in the ballgame.
SXU carried its offensive momentum into Saturday's match-up with Huntington University (8-2) and it paid off with an 87-82 victory. Genova showed off his long-range abilities with eight three-pointers en route to a team-high 28 points. Reiter also had a hot shooting touch Saturday connecting on nine of his 13 shot attempts for 23 points, while Bolger posted his second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 boards. Sophomore point guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) was tough on offense for SXU as well with seven points and seven assists. The game was close throughout, but in the end, the hot three-point shooting proved to be too much for the Forresters. Junior forward Alex Kock led Huntington with 30 points and five rebounds.
In the Classic's other two games, Huntington defeated Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 84-75, Friday behind game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds from Kock. In Saturday's second game, Olivet Nazarene (4-5) avenged the Friday loss with a 125-82 victory over East-West. Seven players for ONU scored in double figures led by junior forward Stan Chismark with 22 points.
Saint Xavier (7-2 overall) heads to Bloomington, Ill., on Monday, November 28, to face Illinois Wesleyan University in a non-conference match-up. IWU (4-0 overall) is ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division III regional poll.
