Men's Basketball - Thu, Dec. 1, 2005
Springfield, Ill. - Despite a game-high 27 points by sophomore guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not pick up a non-conference road win Thursday falling 79-68 to University of Illinois-Springfield at UIS Gymnasium in Springfield, Ill. Marino shot an impressive 10-for-13 from the field in the game, including 5-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc, to lead the Cougars (7-4).

In addition to his points, Marino also led SXU on the boards with seven rebounds and recorded a team-high three steals. Senior guard Mike Brown (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) was tough for Saint Xavier as well turning in 15 points on the night, while sophomore forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) also scored in double figures for SXU with 10 points. The Cougars shot 52 percent from the field (26-for-50) in the game, but could not overcome 24 turnovers.

UIS used a 26-6 scoring run late in the first half to build a 43-25 halftime advantage. Led by Marino, Saint Xavier battled back in the second half and drew to within eight points, 60-52, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. However, the Prairie Stars pushed their lead back into double digits and, although the Cougars got it back down to a single-digit margin in the waning minutes, time eventually ran out. Antonio Puckett led UI-Springfield with 18 points.

Saint Xavier (7-4 overall) returns to action on Saturday, December 3, with a non-conference road game against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
