Deerfield, Ill. - Led by a game-high 22 points by sophomore guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team was able to take the lead when it counted rallying past Trinity International University, 81-76, Saturday in Deerfield, Ill. The Cougars improve to 9-5 overall with the win, while the Trojans fall to 8-8.
Marino shot well from the field hitting seven of his 12 shots (58 percent) in the game, including an impressive 5-for-9 clip (56 percent) from beyond the arc. Senior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Township West) and freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) each finished with 17 points for the Cougars, while senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) chipped in 15. Saunders also led SXU on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Cougars fell behind early in the first half with the Trojans shooting 49 percent (16-for-33) in the first frame to take a 37-30 advantage into the break. TIU kept the pressure on through the first 10 minutes of the second half leading by as many as nine points on four different occasions before SXU made its run. Shooting 57 percent (17-for-30) after halftime, the Cougars rallied and took the lead, with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation. Although the game remained tight over the final stretch, Saint Xavier was able to hit key shots in the waning minutes to keep Trinity International at bay.
SXU (9-5 overall) will host its annual, three-day Midwest Tournament beginning December 21 at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars will open the event with a 1 p.m. scrimmage against St. Thomas Aquinas College (N.Y.).
