CHICAGO - Winning the NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament was not the only good news for the Saint Xavier University baseball team over the weekend, the Cougars also had junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and sophomore pitcher Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) named to the 2005 NAIA All-Region VII Team in their respective positions. In addition, Christy was named the 2005 NAIA Region VII Player of the Year for his outstanding accomplishments on the field this season.

Christy has started at shortstop in 56 of SXU's 59 games this season and currently leads the team in hits (73) and RBI (53). He is batting .353 (73-for-207), the second-best batting average on the team among starters and also has 13 doubles, three triples and four home runs. On the defensive side, he has committed only 12 errors, while recording 82 putouts and a team-high 125 assists.

Quigley, SXU's No. 1 pitcher in the rotation, has a team-best 10 wins (10-1 overall) over 17 appearances and 14 starts in 2005. He has pitched 101.2 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 102. His earned run average (ERA) is second lowest on the team at 1.86 and he has thrown five complete games and three shutouts in 2005. Opposing batters have hit just .205 against Quigley this spring.

Saint Xavier (38-21 overall) takes on Aquinas College (Mich.) at Kimble Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Thursday, May 19, at 2 p.m. (eastern) in the first game of the NAIA Super Regional series. The second game of the series will be played on Friday, May 20, at 12 p.m. (eastern). Game three, if necessary, will immediately follow the second game. Winner of the series advances to the 2005 NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, beginning May 27. SXU has not qualified for the NAIA World Series since the 1988 season.
