- On Saturday, September 2, the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team made an impressive showing in its season opening meet hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) at Horsetail Forest Preserve in Palos Heights, Ill. SXU finished fourth overall in the six-team meet, which featured a field of local NCAA Division I cross country programs, including Loyola (Ill.), DePaul, UIC, and Chicago State.
The Cougars roster consists of four freshmen: Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), Mandy Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), and Megan Syring (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), a returning junior in Alison Schultz (Tinley Park, Ill./Bradley University), a first-year junior in Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic), who also plays softball at SXU, and returning senior, Marianne Lopez (Chicago, Ill./Harold Washington).
In her first meet as Saint Xavier's new women's cross country coach, Lisa Ebel had her team ready for an outstanding showing at the two-mile race against five talented NCAA Division I squads. Dentzman, formerly of the Lemont High School cross country and track team, finished first for the Cougars and No. 13 overall with a time of 12:13. Finishing closely behind her was Janosz and Poull, who turned in 16th and 17th place finishes, respectively, at 12:17. The next finisher for SXU was Syring, who finished in 21st place with a time of 12:36. Wrapping up the team scoring for the Cougars was Bartels with a time of 13:11 and a 29th place finish. Schulz and Lopez both finished the race with times of 13:18 and 13:22, respectively.
Saint Xavier travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to run in the Aquinas Invitational (Mich.) on Friday, September 8. The 5K meet will begin at 5 p.m. (eastern).Click here for the UIC Home Opener Meet
