Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was named the 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Player of the Year and SXU freshman pitcher Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) earned CCAC Freshman of the Year recognition when the 2005 All-CCAC Team and Awards were released Thursday by the conference in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars also had senior catcher Carlos Campos (Stickney, Ill./Morton), sophomore pitcher Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), and junior relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) named to the 2005 All-CCAC First Team, while senior outfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) earned honorable mention.
Christy started at shortstop in 49 of SXU's 52 games this season and leads the team in hits (65), home runs (4), and RBI (47). He is currently batting .371 (65-for-175), the second-best batting average on the team among starters. On the defensive side, he has committed only 10 errors, while recording 67 putouts and a team-high 104 assists.
Zilis is currently the team leader in earned-run average with an impressive 1.24 ERA over 12 appearances. He has started nine games on the mound for the Cougars and has pitched 65.1 innings thus far with six complete games and four shutouts. Zilis is second on the team in strikeouts (77) and wins with six (6-2). Opposing batters are hitting a team-best .182 against him this season.
Campos is currently second on the team in putouts (209) and has a fielding percentage of .970 in addition to recording 31 RBI at the plate. Quigley, SXU's No. 1 pitcher, has a team-best eight wins (8-1) over 14 appearances and 13 starts in 2005. He has pitched 86 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 83. Gregerson served as the team's closer and tallied six saves and two wins (2-2) over 26 innings and 14 appearances of relief work. Coia led the Cougars in runs scored (50), doubles (14), and triples (4), while making 110 putouts and committing only two errors in centerfield.
Saint Xavier will wrap up its regular season slate on the road with a four-game, non-conference series this weekend against Indiana Tech (Ind.) in Fort Wayne, Ind. The first of two doubleheaders begins on Saturday, May 7, at 1 p.m.
