Cedar Rapids, Iowa - A solo home run by senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and stellar pitching from sophomore righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) helped lead the No. 4 seeded Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 3-1 first-round win over No. 3 seeded Mt. Mercy College (Iowa) Thursday at the 2005 NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The game was suspended for five hours in the top of the fifth inning due to inclement weather, but Quigley was able to stay on the mound following the delay to pick up his ninth win of the season (9-1).
Three errors by Mt. Mercy in the top of the first inning helped SXU establish its early 2-0 lead on two unearned runs. Four errors by Saint Xavier in the third inning allowed Mt. Mercy to plate a run, which made the score, 2-1, in favor of the Cougars. Coia hit his solo shot in the top of the fifth inning to give SXU some added insurance down the stretch. Coia finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Saint Xavier (35-20 overall) will take on No. 5 seeded St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Friday, May 13, at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament. St. Ambrose upset No. 2 seeded Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 3-2, Thursday in first round action.
