CHICAGO - Junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 8-for-12 (.667) at the plate with a double, a triple, two homers and 11 RBI to help lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to four wins in its five road-game stretch over the weekend. SXU began the weekend with a 3-0 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) Friday, picked up a non-conference doubleheader split against Bethel College (Ind.) on Saturday, and then swept a CCAC twinbill from Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.) Sunday.

In Friday's 3-0 win over RMC, Christy was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI. He was the only Cougar to finish with more than one hit in the game and his two-out, two-RBI triple in the third inning put SXU's first two runs up on the scoreboard. Christy scored the third and final run for Saint Xavier in the sixth inning on a passed ball by the Robert Morris catcher. Sophomore righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the win on the mound for SXU allowing just five hits and three walks over the first seven innings while recording nine strikeouts. He improves to 8-1 overall on the season.

The Cougars had trouble picking up hits in Saturday's 12-0 game-one loss to Bethel College (Ind.) finishing with just two hits as a team. Due to the 12-run lead, the game ended after five innings and Bethel scored at least one run in each inning. Three errors also hurt Saint Xavier in game one helping Bethel plate two unearned runs in the ballgame. Senior catcher Carlos Campos (Stickney, Ill./Morton) and sophomore first baseman Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) each finished 1-for-2 at the plate. Freshman leftie Jake Curran (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) took the loss for SXU allowing 13 hits and 12 runs (10 earned) over 4.2 innings of work.

Game two was a completely different story as Saint Xavier racked up 13 hits behind a 3-for-3 performance at the plate by Christy. Saint Xavier defeated Bethel, 14-1, in the nightcap and Christy was unstoppable finishing with a double and two home runs en route to a game-high six RBI. Senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) also had a nice outing in game two going 3-for-4 with a RBI and four runs scored. Freshman righthander Joe Zotto (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was equally impressive on the mound for Saint Xavier going all seven innings and giving up just three hits, a run and two walks along with two strikeouts.

The Cougar offense carried the momentum into Sunday's conference doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.) as SXU scored 11 runs in game one to pick up the 11-1 victory. Sophomore second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Campos both had the hot bats in Sunday's first game each finishing with two hits. Campos also recorded three RBI, while Buske turned in three runs scored. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run advantage and White picked up the win on the mound pitching all five innings and allowing just two hits and an unearned run. White recorded six strikeouts as well in picking up his fourth win of the season (4-0).

Sunday's game two against Cardinal Stritch was a similar story as Saint Xavier jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in picking up the 17-4 win. Junior designated hitter Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) also recorded three hits with a run scored and two RBI. Freshman rightie Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) got the start and the win in Sunday's nightcap pitching the first four innings and allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned) with two strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (30-19 overall, 15-3 CCAC) will play CCAC foe Judson College (Ill.) on Monday, May 2, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
