Grand Rapids, Mich. - Juniors Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) both earned spots on the all-tournament team as Saint Xavier University posted a 3-1 record at the Cornerstone University Golden Eagle Volleyball Classic over the weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars (12-13 overall/3-1 CCAC) won their first three matches against Concordia University (Mich.), Davenport University (Mich.), and Siena Heights University (Mich.), respectively, but then fell to host Cornerstone University in the championship match Saturday.
In its first match Friday, SXU jumped all over Concordia winning in three straight games 30-19, 30-15, 30-21 behind 12 kills by Carls. Junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) also had a solid all-around performance with 34 assists and 13 digs, while Breshock finished with nine kills and four total blocks.
The Cougars carried their momentum into Friday's late match defeating Davenport University in three games as well 30-17, 30-23, 30-19. Breshock led the offense for Saint Xavier with 13 kills, while Looby finished with 46 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was tough defensively for SXU with 17 digs and three service aces.
Saturday's matches got off on the right foot with Saint Xavier jumping out to a win over Siena Heights University in three games 30-17, 30-27, 30-19. Breshock spearheaded the offensive attack for the second straight match finishing with 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) had a solid outing as well in Saturday's first match recording 11 kills and 23 digs, while Looby posted 41 assists and 10 digs in the winning effort.
Unfortunately, SXU could not wrap up the Classic with a victory falling in the championship match to host Cornerstone University 18-30, 23-30, 24-30 despite double-digit kill totals for Breshock (12 kills) and Pedigo (11 kills). Looby finished with 37 assists and 19 digs for the Cougars and Carls posted four kills, four solo blocks, and seven digs.
Saint Xavier (12-13 overall, 3-1 CCAC) returns to its conference slate on Tuesday, October 10, with a road match against Robert Morris College (Ill.). The match begins at 7 p.m.
