Somers, Wisc. - Junior Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) and senior Carrie Mockovak (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) combined for 38 kills to help lead the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a five-game match win (30-25, 30-26, 21-30, 26-30, 15-13) over NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside in non-conference action Wednesday night at DeSimone Gymnasium in Somers, Wisconsin. The Cougars recorded 10 kills and no attack errors (.526 attack percentage) in the fifth game to secure the match and improve to 11-11 overall with their fourth straight victory.
Buchmeier paced the SXU offense with 22 kills and only three attack errors, while Mockovak finished with 16 kills and just three miscues. Mockovak also played tough defense picking up five block assists. Senior Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) played tough defensively for the Cougars as well finishing with a team-high 20 digs. The setting duties for Saint Xavier were shared in the match by sophomore Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew), who led with 46 assists, and senior Amy Stephens (Bowen, Ill./Camp Point Central) with 17 assists. SXU (11-11 overall/4-1 CCAC) heads to Grand Rapids, Mich., this weekend to participate in the Cornerstone University (Mich.) Volleyball Tournament opening with a 2 p.m. (eastern) match against Urbana University (Ohio) on Friday, October 7.
