CHICAGO - Behind solid play from juniors Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) and Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won all four of its matches in its own Cougar Invitational II over the weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars have won five of their last six matches and sit at 20-18 overall this season.
On Friday, October 28, SXU defeated Calumet College (Ind.) in three games in its first match (30-8, 30-9, 30-7) and then picked up another three-game match win against Hannibal-LaGrange College (30-10, 30-15, 30-16). On Saturday, October 29, the Cougars beat Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in three games (32-30, 30-25, 30-18) and then wrapped up the event with a three-game match victory (30-16, 30-17, 30-15) over MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.).
In Friday's win against Calumet College (Ind.), Buchmeier led Saint Xavier's offensive attack with 12 kills, while Pedigo finished the match with seven service aces and seven digs. Sophomore setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) recorded team-high 20 assists in the winning effort. In the Cougars' second win Friday versus Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.), Pedigo was perfect in her 13 total attacks recording nine kills with no errors. Looby finished with 26 assists and four service aces, while Buchmeier played well defensively with 14 digs.
Buchmeier and Pedigo combined for 29 kills in Saturday's three-game match win over Trinity Christian College (Ill.). Looby had 45 assists and team-high 21 digs in the victory, while sophomore Kate Eckhoff (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) had six service aces. In Saint Xavier's final match of the Invitational, Buchmeier recorded 11 kills and 10 digs, both team-highs, while senior Carrie Mockovak (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) turned in nine kills and Looby had 19 assists for the Cougars.
SXU (20-18 overall/6-2 CCAC) will head to Milwaukee on Tuesday, November 1, to wrap up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season slate with a road match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.). Start time for the match is 7 p.m.
