Joliet, Ill. - Junior designated hitter Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored to help lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 8-4 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Monday night at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. With the win, SXU improves to 20-15 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

In addition to Gruber's two hits, junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished the game 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and a RBI. Sophomore first baseman Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) also had a nice outing with a triple and two RBI, while senior pinch hitter Pat Flynn (Chicago, Ill./University of Illinois) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. SXU outhit St. Francis (Ill.), 11-8, in the game and had only one error compared to three miscues by the Fighting Saints.

Sophomore righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the win for Saint Xavier pitching all nine innings and allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with 10 strikeouts. Quigley improves his win-loss record to 6-1 this season with the victory.

The Cougars scored their first run of the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by White. White picked up his second RBI in the fourth inning on a two-out, RBI triple to left-center to put SXU ahead, 2-0. After USF scored a run in the fifth inning, Saint Xavier answered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning paced by two key errors by the Saints. St. Francis added three more runs in the seventh inning, but a RBI triple by Christy helped the Cougars score two insurance runs in the ninth to seal the 8-4 victory.

Saint Xavier will take on CCAC foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Tuesday, April 19, for one nine-inning road game in Palos Heights, Ill., starting at 3:30 p.m.
