Upland, Ind. - Despite a spot on the all-tournament team for junior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team struggled over the weekend dropping three of its four matches at the 2006 Taylor University (Ind.) Volleyball Invitational in Upland, Ind. The Cougars (9-12 overall/3-1 CCAC) won their first match against Davenport University (Mich.) Friday, but then dropped its remaining three matches of the event.

Breshock led SXU with nine kills as SXU defeated Davenport University in three games 30-13, 30-25, 30-16. Junior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) also had a nice outing in SXU's first match Friday finishing with eight kills and seven digs, while junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) recorded 33 set assists and four total blocks.

Saint Xavier played extremely tough in its next match Friday against Huntington University (Ind.), but came up just short falling in five games 24-30, 30-15, 24-30, 30-25, 12-15. Breshock had another great performance with 18 kills, while Synowiecki also hit double figures in kills with 10. Defensively, sophomore libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led the Cougars with 25 digs and junior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) posted seven total blocks.

The SXU offense could not get on track in Saturday's matches as the team dropped a four-game set to host Taylor University 30-26, 14-30, 21-30, 24-30. Synowiecki led the offensive attack with 17 kills and Breshock finished with 11. Looby recorded 48 set assists, 21 digs, and five total blocks in the losing effort, while senior outside hitter Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) had a solid all-around performance with seven kills, 23 digs, and a block assist.

The Cougars wrapped up play in the Invitational with a four-game match loss to Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) 30-28, 20-30, 27-30, 19-30. Synowiecki paced SXU with 19 kills and Guide led the defensive front with 23 digs. In addition, Pedigo had another solid outing finishing with eight kills, 15 digs, and two solo blocks.

Saint Xavier (9-12 overall, 3-1 CCAC) returns to its conference slate on Tuesday, October 3, with a road match against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The match begins at 7 p.m.
