CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University head baseball coach Mike Dooley picked up his 500th career win Saturday when the Cougars swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from visiting Trinity International University (Ill.) Saturday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Dooley came into Saturday's doubleheader with 498 career wins and SXU picked up a 7-0 win in game one followed by a 7-1 victory in the nightcap to reach the milestone.
"To me, this win is significant because it is a testament to all the coaches who have coached with me and all the players who have played for me throughout the years," said Dooley. "The thing I am most proud of is how consistent this program has become. Year in and year out, our players expect to win and get it done on the field. This is definitely a milestone for the program."
In Saint Xavier's first win Saturday, senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) led the Cougars at the plate with a game-high three hits, including a triple, and three runs scored. Senior catcher Carlos Campos (Stickney, Ill./Morton) went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while junior designated hitter Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) earned the win on the mound for SXU pitching all seven innings and allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out eight TIU batters.
The Cougars carried the momentum of game one into the nightcap with Gruber, sophomore first baseman Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) and freshman third baseman Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) each recording two hits and a RBI. Junior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) finished the game with a triple, a run scored and a RBI as well for SXU. Junior southpaw Nick Karko (Alsip, Ill./Marist) picked up the win for Saint Xavier pitching all seven innings and giving up seven hits and one earned run.
Saint Xavier also picked up another conference win on Friday, April 15, with a 12-3 road victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at Block Stadium in East Chicago. White got the start and the win for SXU pitching seven innings and giving up five hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts.
